LWV Forum Intro Speech

Had a great time at the League of Women Voter's forum tonight. Here is my intro speech:

I have lived in Cupertino for 25 years, and I am the proud mother of 2 grown sons who attended our local public schools and now hold multiple degrees.

I am qualified for the City Council position because I am uniquely the sole civil engineer among the candidates or council. In fact, my background is in land development, and I am pro-sensible growth. I am the chair of the Planning Commission, and the Environmental Review Committee, and unlike the other candidates I have had advanced California Environmental Quality Act training.

I was raised in Vermont and attended the university on a AFROTC scholarship. I have all veteran siblings, husband, father and uncles. (Left out Fun facts: My first job in high school was briefly working for Congressman Jeffords and in college I met Senator Sanders while working on a parking study when he was the mayor.)

I notably was a petitioner in the Vallco lawsuit to defend against the largest project in the city’s history which unfortunately used a housing law to worsen the housing shortage. Everyone complains about the Vallco SB 35 project, yet I am the only candidate who volunteered working for the attorneys for nearly two years on the lawsuit and up to 15 hours a day when our 2018 city council refused to defend the residents.

You will not see my signs in front of a developers’ property, because I am not beholden to special interest groups and you can count on me to defend the residents, do my homework, provide detail-oriented and efficient analysis, make difficult decisions, collaborate rationally, care about equity across our community while we continue to improve our quality of life.
